Never have attended a Dead show, what do people do during these “free jams” like the rendition of Good Lovin on the precious disc and Dark Star on this one? Restroom break? Go out for pizza? Light up? I wonder if they are settling into a groove where the second set features lots of free jams?
To me, the best parts of these jams is hearing how they transition to the next song. Oftentimes am instrument will start teasing the melody or the main riff sometime near the end of the jam. This first attempt rarely takes hold so later on there will be another attempt. Eventually the rest of the band will join in.
Well, the vocal harmonies in Sugar Magnolia aren’t very harmonic. But it’s still a great arrangement.
