This second disc of the show opens with Playing In The Band. I’m normally not a fan of long extended jams but this song clocks in at a little over 11 min so it’s certainly on the more tolerable side. Jerry and Phil both step out, feeding off of each other. Somehow it gets reeled back in at about 8:50 with Bob leading the way.
Good Lovin is next with a cool intro that I’ve not heard before. Phil opens with a C to Bb bass line and then Pigpen begins with vocals over the familiar C F G progression. I can’t tell who’s singing harmony behind him. The guitar solo sounds like C Mixolydian. Static C chords.
Pigpen then does some vocal improvisation over this same C chord jam. He drops out and then both guitars, bass, keyboard and piano jam for a bit before Pigpen rejoins them. The song starts up again with a little over 2 min left.
Looks like Rain is a slow ballad in Ab. Jerry playing some soulful steel guitar on this one. The internet says that this was first played in late March, 1972 so this is a pretty early version of the song, Annotated Grateful Dead lyrics is a great resource!

Next up is Casey Jones. This is the first Grateful Dead song that I remember hearing. Off of a studio album (Working Mans Dead. Or perhaps the radio since I didn’t own the album then). Key of C by the way.

Truckin-Rose straight to the top of the charts in Turlock CA! Shuffle in E. Bob forgets some lyrics but quickly recovers! After a fairly tame jam Jerry launches into a modal guitar solo, the band is really tight here-everybody inspiring everybody else.
Big Railroad Blues. Straight ahead blues in A. Great solo by Jerry. Bob branches out a bit too! rockin rhythm on this one.
It Hurts Me Too. Starts off with a slide intro by Jerry. Vocals and harmonica by Pigpen. Guitar solo by Jerry. Key of A. 1-4-5 chords only but in some unusual ways.
