This second disc opens with a 30+ minute version of Dark Star. Dark Star has yet to grow on me from any performance. Maybe I’ll get there at some point. But I will agree that lots of musical territory is covered. Towards the end the band hints at the next song, Sugar Magnolia.
Sugar Magnolia is next. Followed by Sunshine Daydream (as it often is). Key of B. The Dead really liked the key of B! Opening riff is B. Up a 4th I guess to E . The 5th I guess is then F#. I don’t know. I’m going by shapes.
Caution Do Not Stop on Tracks is next. About 18 min. Have I heard this before? I don’t think so. E major. Not sure where sure this is going. Sounds modal in E. I’m doing this in real time. I hear Pigpen. there he is again. About 4 min in. Jerry doing his pentatonic lead stuff. Mostly pentatonic. Maybe it’s E Mixolydian.
About 12:20 Pigpen joins in via harp, this is really cool in an unusual sort of way. Friends having a great time together. It’s winding down with 3:30 left.
New guitar riff. E D B chords. Definitely Mixolydian. Wow.
“Do You Feel Alright?”
“The Grateful Dead”
