The Greatest Story Ever Told opens this set. Is it ok to say that I don’t understand the lyrics to this song? Because I don’t.
Deal is next. I really like this. Interesting chord progression. I think it’s 1-3-6-4. Followed by 1-5-#5-6-2-5. Key of A. Great lyrics too.
Update. I’m listening to this again. The above chord progression is close. But not quite right. Listen to the bass! More work needed. I’ve saved this in my Grateful Dead to learn playlist.
Pigpen then takes over the mic for Mr. Charlie. I’m digging this too. It’s the blues!
Black Throated Wind features Jerry doing some awesome fills.
Tennessee Jed has Bob adding some tasty accents. Similar to adding spice while cooking, he’s not really playing rhythm. Drums bass and keyboard are doing that.
Big Boss Man is a Jimmy Reed song. Slow to medium shuffle. A simple but soulful harmonica solo by Pigpen is featured front and center.
Beat it on Down The Line makes another appearance. The keyboards seem more active this time. Listening to Jerry’s solo one can learn a lot about how to play over the changes just on this one song.
Sugaree is next. Was that Phil playing bass in the upper register at the beginning? What a great song.
Who is singing harmony in Jack Straw? Maybe Keith on keyboards?
Do I know Chinatown Shuffle? Pigpen again. Shotguns. Don’t expect no help at all. Blues in C.
China Cat SunFlower. I think this is a first on this tour. Bobs fills are interesting. Again, I’m not sure I’m understanding the lyrics. Maybe it’s just word play and I’m not getting it. Key of G
I Know You Rider concludes this disc. A seamless transition from China Cat Flower. Jerry proves again that he is a genius at connecting the chord changes in his solos. The D C G changes spell out Mixolydian.
