4/11/72 Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle, England

This is the third CD for this show. 1 hour 16 minutes!

Truckin was an early 70s radio hit. It’s interesting that the verse stays on the E chord. The familiar 1-4-5-4-1 is in the chorus. The bridge is a little different still.

This version is nearly 20 min long! Obviously not the radio version.

So far the jam is a modal jam in E. No shortage of ideas here from any of the players.

The second jam is far spacier. In fact, this might be the premonition of them adding “Space” to future set lists. “Drums” is after this so maybe I’m onto something.

I like most of the “Drums” that I’ve heard. I guess all those hours spent listening to Buddy Rich have influenced me.

The Other One is a 25:47 minute version. Wow. They are really over doing it here! Listen to the bass in the intro. Phil is all over the place. I mean that in a good way. A few minutes in, the bass tries to lead the band into the song but the jamming continues.

7 min in the opening riffs are recognizable and the song is officially starting.

At 8:58 another jam is starting. At 14:30 it really changes again to a free modal form. I can smell the audience lighting up!

The rhythm and energy pick back up with about 3 min left. With about 2 min left we are back to the recognizable rhythm of the song. The vocals join in with under a min left to bring us home.

Comes A Time starts up after the applause. A slow ballad in A. I’m not sure that I’ve heard this before.

“What does it all mean?” Is a question that Bob asks the crowd after the applause.

Sugar Magnolia brings us back into familiar territory. Followed by Sunshine Daydream. Maybe it’s just me today. But I didn’t find this song particularly inspiring.

Brokedown Palace follows. I think this is first for this tour. Slow ballad in F. And yet another 2-4 progression. Dm makes an appearance here also.

One more Saturday Night is the encore here. great blues licks by Jerry here.
